Why Won't My Car Start?
When it comes to car trouble there is no shortage of issues that can prevent you from getting from A to B. However, few things are as annoying and frustrating as jumping in your car only to have it not start when you turn the key. The starting process for a vehicle is relatively complex, but it only takes a few key components. Should one or more of these parts fail you'll be stuck in the driveway, or wherever you may be. Fortunately, it is fairly simple for a professional auto repair technician to determine why a car won't start. Let's look at the most common reasons a car won't start.
The number one reason your car won't start is a dead battery. While batteries do need to be replaced from time to time, usually every 3 to 5 years, it is more common for them to die due to leaving the lights on or a door ajar. This will drain the battery, requiring a jump start to get it charged back up.
Fuel Delivery Issue
If the engine can't get any gasoline it won't be able to run, obviously. There's a few places the gas may get held up. The most common issue is a failed fuel pump, however this issue could also be caused by a clogged fuel filter that needs to be replaced or a fuel injector unit that is malfunctioning.
The starter motor is what puts the engine in motion. If it fails you will generally hear a loud click, click, click or a single click, when you turn the key in the ignition. If this happened to you for the first time just recently you can sometimes hit the starter with a hammer to get it to work one or two more times, but it will need to be replaced ASAP.
The alternator is what powers all electrical aspects of your vehicle when the engine is running. If the alternator fails or begins to fail you will likely experience a number of strange electrical occurrences, such as trouble with the radio, power windows or seats and the engine may seem to even sputter. Because the alternator is what keeps the battery charged, its failure will prevent you from being able to start the car as the battery won't have any juice to provide the initial spark to get everything going.
